Barrel Sauna vs Cabin Sauna: Cost, Space, Install
Share
Three shapes of sauna will do the same job. Which one suits you is decided by your ground, your access, and whether the thing is going indoors at all.
Here is the honest comparison, with the real numbers attached.
The barrel
A barrel sauna is a horizontal cylinder on cradles. The shape is not styling. A curved roof sheds rain and snow without a pitch, and the round cross-section means there is less dead air above your head to heat than in a square room with the same bench length.
Ours are Finnish Sauna Builders, and there are four:
| Model | Price |
|---|---|
| Helsinki Barrel with Terrace | $12,910 |
| Tampere Barrel with WiFi Heater | $12,931 |
| Turku Barrel with Terrace and WiFi Heater | $14,760 |
| Vassa Barrel with WiFi Heater | $14,819 |
The two with a terrace give you a small covered platform at the entrance. That is worth more than it sounds in a climate where you will be stepping out onto something in bare feet.
What a barrel needs from you: a level, load-bearing pad. Gravel, pavers or a slab, prepared before delivery. Not lawn. The cradles concentrate the weight onto a few points, so an unlevel base is not a cosmetic problem, it is a door-fit problem.
Where barrels are awkward: the curve eats floor space at the edges, so usable standing room is narrower than the outside diameter suggests. If you want a changing bench and somewhere to hang a towel, a barrel is tight.
The cabin
A cabin is a conventional structure with vertical walls and a pitched or flat roof. Straight walls mean full head height across the whole floor, easier shelving, and room for a changing area at the front.
Our outdoor cabins are the Mande ThermoWood range:
| Model | Price range |
|---|---|
| Mande MW12 ThermoWood | $5,499 – $7,523 |
| Mande MW16 ThermoWood | $6,399 – $8,598 |
| Mande MW20 ThermoWood | $7,499 – $11,042 |
Those are ranges because the configuration moves the number — heater choice and options. The MW12 starting at $5,499 is the cheapest route into a real outdoor sauna that we stock, and it undercuts every barrel by several thousand dollars.
ThermoWood is timber that has been heat-treated rather than chemically treated. The process improves dimensional stability and resistance to rot, which is what you want on something that lives outside through a wet winter and a dry summer. It is a material property, not a coating that wears off.
What a cabin needs from you: the same level pad, and usually a slightly larger one, because the footprint is rectangular and the walls sit directly on it.
The custom indoor room
The third option is not a building at all. It is a sauna room built to fit a space you already have — a basement corner, a spare bathroom, a garage bay.
Finnish Sauna Builders make these to fixed footprints, and the range is wide:
| Footprint | Price range |
|---|---|
| 3' x 4' x 8' | $5,191 – $9,817 |
| 4' x 6' x 8' | $6,901 – $12,123 |
| 5' x 7' x 8' | $8,197 – $13,546 |
| 6' x 8' x 8' | $9,883 – $15,747 |
| 8' x 9' x 8' | $12,648 – $20,598 |
Look at the spread rather than the starting price. A 4' x 6' room runs from $6,901 to $12,123 — the same footprint, nearly double the money, depending on wood, heater, glass and controls. Anyone quoting you a single number for a custom room without asking what goes in it is quoting you a fantasy.
All of them are 8 feet tall, which is the detail to check first. Measure your ceiling before you fall in love with a footprint.
What an indoor room needs from you: the space, a floor that can take it, and electrical service that reaches. It needs no pad, no roof, and no weatherproofing — which is why it is often the cheaper project even when the unit costs more.
Choosing between them
Go barrel if it is going in a garden, you want it to look like a sauna from fifty feet away, and the terrace models solve your "where do I stand" problem.
Go cabin if you want head height across the whole floor, a changing area, or the lowest entry price — the MW12 at $5,499 is the least expensive outdoor route we have.
Go custom indoor if you have the space and it is heated and dry. You skip the pad, the weather, and the trench.
The part nobody budgets for
Every one of these ships LTL freight, not parcel. That means a truck, an appointment, and a curbside drop. Curbside means the end of your driveway, not your back garden.
Two consequences worth planning around:
Access. Measure the route from where the truck can stop to where the sauna is going. Gates, side returns, steps, overhanging branches. A barrel that will not fit down the side of the house is a problem discovered on delivery day if you do not check it first.
Timing. Lead times on built-to-order rooms run to several weeks before freight even begins, and freight is scheduled by appointment after that. Delivery is quoted per item, and we will not give you a date we cannot stand behind.
We cover how the freight process actually works — inspection, refusal, and what you sign — in a separate article, because it deserves one.
Before you decide
Measure three things: the pad or floor area, the ceiling height, and the delivery route. Those three numbers eliminate most of the catalog for you and make the rest of the conversation short.
