That's not marketing language — it's documented in peer-reviewed research, including studies showing reduced muscle soreness and improved recovery markers when light is applied shortly after exercise.

Standing near a sunny window doesn't do the same thing. Glass filters out most of the wavelengths that matter here, which is the actual reason a dedicated panel exists as a product category rather than "just open your blinds."

The Wavelengths That Matter

Red light around 660nm works mostly at the skin's surface. Near-infrared around 850nm penetrates deeper into muscle. Wavelength gets all the marketing attention, but irradiance (how much light actually reaches your skin at a given distance) matters just as much, and it's the number most panels don't publish. A panel with impressive wavelength specs and no irradiance data at a stated distance is a panel you can't actually evaluate.

Flicker is the other overlooked spec. Cheap drivers flicker at rates you can't consciously see but that can cause eye strain over a session. Look for panels that specify flicker-free or high-frequency drivers, not just LED count.

Finding Your Perfect Match: A Framework for Choosing Your Home Panel

Start with what you actually want it for. Skin-focused use leans toward 660nm-heavy panels used closer to the skin. Muscle recovery benefits more from a dual-wavelength panel (660nm + 850nm) with enough power output to matter at a foot or two of distance, since near-infrared needs real irradiance to penetrate.

After that, it's mostly about size (bigger panels treat more of your body per session, at a higher price) and whether the manufacturer actually publishes irradiance and flicker data. If they don't, that's worth treating as a red flag, not an oversight.
